Michael Bauer holds the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. He is a Professor of psychiatry and the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. Professor Bauer is currently the President of the International Group for the Study of Lithium-Treated Patients (IGSLI) and a Board Member of the German Society of Bipolar Disorder. He serves as the Scientific Secretary of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) Task Force on Treatment Guidelines for Unipolar Depressive Disorders, and in 2002, he published as first author the WFSBP Guidelines for Biological Treatment of Unipolar Depressive Disorders. His research interests are the neurobiology and treatment of mood disorders with an emphasis on bipolar disorder and refractory depression. He has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 40 book chapters.
