Pierluigi Toniutto

Pierluigi Toniutto graduated in medicine and surgery in 1989 at the University of Trieste (Italy) with specialty in internal medicine at the University of Padova (Italy) in 1994, debating a thesis concerning the immune response against hepatitis C virus infection in humans. Toniutto is a Guest Scientist at the Molecular Pathology Unit of the International Centre of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Padriciano Trieste (Italy) and involved in researches concerning the molecular characterization of different hepatitis C virus genotypes in humans. He established an internationally recognized research group in Udine which made significant contributions in understanding the mechanisms involved in the liver damage related to hepatitis C virus infection, in particular concerning the hepatitis C recurrence in the graft after liver transplantation. From 1996, Toniutto involved as Hepatologist in the management and in the selection of liver transplant candidates and in the care of patients after liver transplantation at the University of Udine, Italy. From 2001, Toniutto is a Chair of the Hepatology team of the liver transplant program at the University of Udine, Italy. From 2007, Toniutto is an Assistant Professor of medicine at the University of Udine, Italy. Toniutto is a Member of the European Association of the study of the Liver (EASL) and a Member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF).
