Swaran J. S. Flora, Scientist ā€˜Gā€™ (Associate Director) (born March 7, 1956), is currently Head of the Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Defense Research and Development Establishment, Gwalior, India. Flora got his Ph.D. degree from the Industrial Toxicology Research Center, Lucknow, India, and was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Utah State University, Logan, UT, USA. Flora has contributed significantly to the area of clinical therapeutic measures for the treatment of metal poisoning. His areas of current research include oxidative stress, free radical biology, role of antioxidants, and development of a new antidote for arsenic poisoning. He has published over 250 research papers in highly rated peer-reviewed journals, including more than 50 review articles/chapters in international books, which have been widely cited in the international literature. He is a member in the editorial board of 25 international journals and in the reviewing panel for more than 45 journals. He is Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (FNASc), Academy of Environmental Biology (FAEB), and Academy of Biotechnology and Pharmacy (FABP). He was awarded prestigious Dr. Kailash Nath Katju award of Madhya Pradesh Government and Shakuntala Amir Chand award of Indian Council of Medical Research. He was also awarded Life Time Achievement Award of Society of Toxicology (India), Archana gold medal of Academy of Environmental Biology (AEB) for his contribution in the area of toxicology. Flora was awarded "Best Technology Award" of DRDE in the year 2009 for developing a new drug for arsenic toxicity. Dr. Flora has delivered more than 150 invited lectures in India and abroad and has chaired many scientific sessions. He has so far supervised 21 students for their Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, pharmacology, biotechnology, and others.
