Apostolos Karantanas was born in Larissa, Greece, in 1959. He graduated from the Medical School, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece, at 1983. Dr. Karantanas completed the Radiology training at the same University, in the Radiology Department. He undertook musculoskeletal training on metabolic bone disorders as a Research Fellow in New York University Medical Center and Manchester Medical School and as Visiting Consultant Radiologist on MRI (Manchester Royal Infirmary). He received his Ph.D. degree with a thesis on “Quantitative computed tomography and bone mineral density: technical aspects, dosimetry and clinical results,” Department of Medical Physics, University of Ioannina, 1989. He has given 430 invited lectures in Greece, Europe, Eastern Europe, USA, and South Africa. He is the author of 140 Medline publications (1000 citations), 3 books Theory and Praxis of MRI, 1997; Imaging of Sports Injuries,2010; Sports Injuries in Children and Adolescents, Springer, 2011; 35 chapters in books and 284 announcements in international conferences. Prof. Karantanas is a reviewer in 17 Medline journals, editorial board in two, and has been a guest editor in 3 issues of Medline journals. He is past President of European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology and Member of the Educational Committee of the European Association of Radiology. Prof. Karantanas currently serves as an Associate Professor of Radiology, University of Crete; Chairman of the Department of Medical Imaging, University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece; FORTH Affiliated Scientist.
