Birgitta Söder received a Ph.D. degree and serves as a Professor in odontological prophylaxis in the Department of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Söder's research activities involve epidemiological and clinical studies of the relationship between dental plaque, oral hygiene, gingival inflammation, periodontitis, and systemic diseases, particularly the role of oral infections in cardiovascular diseases and cancer and diabetes including systemic makers relating cardiovascular and cancer diseases and periodontitis as well as the role of bacterial interactions. Other research areas of interest are the influence of anxiety and stress-related mental depression on periodontal health as well as tobacco related periodontal diseases. The overall goal is the prevention of gingival inflammation and periodontitis. Söder was awarded the IADR Oral Health Research Group Award in 1998 and the IFDH Research Award, in 2004. Söder was former President of the International Association for Dental Research: Oral health Research Group and is currently research Group Leader for studies in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden; University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland; and University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy.
