Asgaut Viste was born in 1947. He finished medical school at the University of Oslo, Norway, in 1972. He is qualified as a general surgeon in 1979 and gastrointestinal surgery in 1987. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1986 from the University of Bergen, Norway, with thesis entitled “ Gastric cancer—a study of risk factors and survival.” Moreover, he is a Research Fellow at the Department of Surgery, University of Minnesota, Minn, U|SA. Since 1990, he has been a Consultant in surgery, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen. He has been a Professor at the Institute of Surgical Sciences, University of Bergen, since 1997. In addition, he was the Head of this institute from 1999 to 2003 and the Head of Department of Surgery, Haukeland University Hospital, from 1992 to 1998. Viste is a Founder and the Head of Norwegian Society of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is a Member of the Board of the Norwegian Medical Association and of the Editorial Board of Scandinavian Journal of Surgery and Gastric Cancer. His special interests include gastric and esophageal cancer, laparoscopy, and surgical endoscopy. He has been a tutor of about 10 Ph.D. students and has published about 120 papers.
