Mariano Bizzarri

Mariano Bizzarri, holder of Ph.D. and M.D. degrees, serves as an Associate Professor of biochemistry in the Department of Experimental Medicine, the University La Sapienza, Roma, Italy. He is a Visiting Professor at the State University of Tomsk, Russia. He was appointed as Member of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) scientific committee in 2005, and he was elected President of that committee in 2011. He is a Cofounder of the Italian Society for Space Biomedicine and Biochemistry (2006) and the ASI Telemedicine Program (Telesal, 2006). He is Head of the Systems Biology Laboratory (2009) and Member of the Space Research Interdepartmental Center of the University La Sapienza. Professor Bizzarri is the Editorial Director of SpaceMag (www.spacemag.it) and member of the editorial board of several journals. He has authored the book The New Alchemists (WIT Press, UK), in which he critically evaluated the status of the genetically based paradigm and its exploitation by the GMO-producing industry. Professor Bizzarri’s main research fields can be summarized as follows: apoptotic and differentiating cellular-tissue pathways, systems biology approach in the integrative understanding of cell and tumour biology, proteomic and metabolomic analysis of cells in microgravity, cytoskeleton and fractal shape analysis in biology, and study of complex systems in biology.
