Rafael Toledo was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1966. He received a PharmD degree from the University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain, in 1989, and a Ph.D. degree in parasitology and immunology from the same university, in 1992. He is currently an Associate Professor of parasitology at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Valencia. He began working on trematode biology and systematics, with emphasis on echinostomes. During his postdoctoral at the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA, he focused on immunological aspects of host-parasite interactions. Currently, his research is focused on the immunological interactions, taking Echinostoma-rodent and other intestinal helminth infections as experimental model. He has written and/or edited more than 150 works including original research articles in peer-reviewed journals, reviews, book chapters, and books. Toledo is a member of several biological societies and serves as an editor and or referee for numerous biological journals. His areas of expertise include parasitology, molecular biology, and immunology.
