Chiyoe Murata is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Shizuoka, Japan. She studied at the Department of Community Health Sciences, UCLA School of Public Health as a Fulbright scholar and obtained the M.P.H. degree in 1999. After returning to Japan, she obtained the Ph.D. degree from the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine in the year 2005. Her dissertation title was "Effects of social relationships on mortality among the elderly in a Japanese rural area.” She is currently involved with the Aichi Gerontological Evaluation Study (AGES) project. This ongoing project has started in 2000 to investigate factors associated with health decline among the old. She wrote various papers regarding health disparities across different socioeconomic groups in Japan. Her current research interests include psychosocial determinants of health, person-environment interactions, and culture as applied to health education/ promotion.
