Mustafa Canakci received his B.S. degree in automotive engineering technology, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey, in 1989. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA, and Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA, in 1996 and 2001, respectively. He was awarded the Research Excellence Award from Iowa State University in 2001. After working as a Research Fellow at the Engine Research Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA, he started to work as a Faculty Member at Kocaeli University, Kocaeli, Turkey. He has been working as a Professor at the Department of Automotive Engineering. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses related to IC engines, combustion, and fuels. He has authored several publications in national and international journals and was involved in R&D projects related to alternative fuels and their usage in IC engines. His research areas include biodiesel production; combustion, performance, and emissions of IC engines; alternative fuels; and HCCI engines.
