Ian A. Frigaard

Ian A. Frigaard received his B.S. degree from Cardiff University, and his M.S. and D.Phil degrees from Oxford University. In his professional career, he has worked with Alcan International (1990–1993) and Schlumberger (1995–2000), and has held postdoctoral appointments in Linz, Austria, before joining the faculty at University of British Columbia in 2000, where he is cross-appointed between Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics Departments. His research interests fall into two main categories. The first is non-Newtonian fluid mechanics: the particular interest here is in the flow of visco-plastic (yield stress) fluids. The group conducts research that combines mathematical, experimental, and computational approaches. Research is roughly half focused towards industrial application and half on fundamental topics. The second is industrial mathematical modeling: broadly, this has covered processes combining thermal and fluid dynamic effects. Examples include oilfield cementing, spray deposition/forming, injection molding, continuous casting, Czrochalski crystal growth, image processing, wellbore hydraulics, slurry transport, and well control. Frigaard is a Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Rheology, Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society, SIAM, IMA, and the Canadian Rheology Group. He is on the Editorial Board of Advances in Mechanical Engineering and the Journal of Engineering Mathematics, as well as being a Guest Editor of the Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics for special issues concerned with visco-plastic fluids.
