Catherine Hankins MD MSc FRCPC is Deputy Director, Science at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development, Department of Global Health, University of Amsterdam and Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, England in the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health. For almost a decade she was the Chief Scientific Adviser to UNAIDS, heading up its scientific knowledge translation team focused on HIV prevention trials - from the ethical and participatory conduct of trials to communicating about results and convening mathematical modelling teams to supporting country implementation of proven biomedical HIV prevention modalities. She led the first UN Work Plan on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention, co-led the UN programme on preparing for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, and was the editor of the popular UNAIDS’ science blog HIV This Week. Dr Hankins is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of CAPRISA in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and a member of the WHO/UNAIDS HIV Vaccine Initiative Advisory Committee and the International AIDS Society Industry Liaison Forum. She chairs the Scientific Advisory Group of the USA National Institutes of Health HIV Prevention Trials Network.
