Asrat Hailu Mekuria
A. Hailu is a Ph.D. degree holder; he is a professor of immunoparasitology at the Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University (AAU). He has taught immunology and parasitology to undergraduate and postgraduate students since 1984. His research experiences range from experimental parasitology to immunology of parasitic infections in man and experimental animals. The immunology of leishmaniasis pertaining to antibodies and cytokines, cellular immune processes, and immunodiagnosis have been pivotal in his domain of research. The main disease that has captured Hailu’s academic career is leishmaniasis, including HIV coinfection. Other diseases that Professor Hailu researches upon are lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, intestinal parasitosis, and malaria. Hailu is the Head of the Leishmaniasis Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (LRDL) at the Faculty of Medicine, AAU and a Key Member of the Leishmaniasis East African Platform (LEAP). He is currently coordinating the currently ongoing clinical trials on visceral leishmaniasis treatments in Ethiopia. Hailu has authored over 70 publications pertaining to leishmaniasis in Ethiopia.
