Giovanni Addolorato holds an M.D. degree. He joined the faculty of the Medical School of the Catholic University of Rome, Italy, in 2001. He is the Head of the Alcoholism Treatment Unit at the Institute of Internal Medicine (Section of Hepatology and Gastroenterology) of the Gemelli Hospital, Catholic University of Rome. His research is focused on the pharmacological treatment of alcohol dependence, with a particular emphasis on the role of GABAergic medications. He has also investigated several clinical aspects of chronic alcohol abuse, including nutritional and metabolic disorders, alcoholic liver disease, and alcohol-related gastrointestinal disorders. His scientific publications include more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals (impact factor: 656; h-index: 28) as Lancet, American Journal of Medicine, Neuropsychopharmacology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Internal Medicine, and Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Moreover, he is the Chief Editor of Frontiers in Addictive Disorders, an Associate Editor of Alcologia: European Journal of Alcohol Studies, and a Member of the Editorial Boards of Alcohol and Alcoholism, European Addiction Research, and World Journal of Gastroenterology. In 2008, Dr. Addolorato was presented with the Italian Society on Liver Studies (AISF) Distinguished Researcher Award. In addition, he has been a Member of the European Research Advisory Board (ERAB) (since 2006). He has been a Member of the National Anti-Drugs Commission of the Department for Anti-Drug Policies, Office of the Government of Italy (since 2009).
