Panayoula C. Tsiotra

Division of Basic Sciences, Molecular Biology Lab., Hellenic National Center for Research, Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus and its Complications (H.N.D.C.), Greece

Panayoula Tsiotra received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in molecular biology from the Department of Biology, Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, University of Crete. From 1997, she is working as a Researcher in the Division of Basic Sciences of the Hellenic National Center for the Research, Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus and its Complications (H.N.D.C), Athens, Greece. Her main research interests are focused on the molecular mechanisms leading to the development of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes and their associated complications such as atherosclerosis and obesity. Tsiotra has studied the effects of inflammatory cytokines and metabolic substances in human peripheral monocyte cytokine expression and in beta-pancreatic cells function and insulin secretion. Further research activities include the association of adiponectin with atherosclerosis and the study of the expression profiles of the various adipokines from the human fat depots and their association with insulin resistance. She is a Member of several national and international scientific societies, and she served as Member of the Organizing Committee for International Symposiums. Her research work has been presented in several international scientific meetings and published in scientific journals (J Clin Endocrinol Metab, Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord, J Biol Chem, Metabolism, Cardiovasc Diabetol, Horm Metab Res, Mediators Inflamm, and Ann.NY Acad Sci). Tsiotra serves as a Reviewer in several scientific journals.
