Piercarlo Mustarelli is Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry. He is Responsible of the NMR Laboratory at "Centro Grandi Strumenti" of the University of Pavia, and leader of the Thin Film Laboratory at the Department of Physical Chemistry. At the beginning of his research activity, Mustarelli contributed to the developing of both hardware (probes and transceivers) and software for NMR instrumentation. Later he started to study the physico-chemical, structrural and transport properties of disordered solids, chiefly polymer and glassy electrolytes. To this aim, he used NMR spectroscopy, both static and at the magic angle (MAS), thermal techniques (DSC, MDSC, DEA, TGA), IR and EXAFS spectroscopies, X-rays diffraction. Then, started new research activities in the field of materials for energy and photonics, chiefly based on silica, both prepared in massive form by sol-gel routes (xerogel and aerogel), and as thin films. Recently, he has extended his interests to the field of biomaterials for prosthesis, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. He is Author or co-Author of more than 160 publications on international journals, and about 250 communications at both national and international Conferences.
