Victor W. van Beusechem
Victor W. van Beusechem received an M.Sc. degree in medical biology from the VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1987 and a Ph.D. degree (cum laude) from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands in 1993. From 1987 to 1993, he developed a stem cell gene therapy for ADA-SCID at the Institute for Applied Radiobiology and Immunology TNO in Rijswijk. He was involved in bringing this treatment from the bench to the bedside, with the procedure finally being tested in patients. From 1993 to 1998, he was a senior scientist at Introgene (now Crucell) in Leiden, where he initiated research on targeting adenovirus vectors for gene therapy and vaccination. In 1998, he continued his research at the department of medical oncology at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, with focus on cancer gene therapy and oncolytic viruses. Currently, he is Associate Professor and Head of the Oncogenomics Laboratory of the department and the Director of the RNA Interference Functional Oncogenomics Laboratory, a VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam core facility for whole-genome siRNA library screening. Since 2008, he is a Chief Scientific Officer of ORCA Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company focusing on the development of new anticancer treatments using oncolytic viruses. Dr. van Beusechem was awarded a research fellowship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000) and received the Greiner Award from The Netherlands Society of Gene Therapy (2001). He was a Member of the Organizing Committees of the first and second International Symposia on Genetic Anti-Cancer Agents in 1999 and 2001 and of the 15th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy in 2007. Moreover, he is Treasurer and President of the Science Committee of The Netherlands Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and a Member of the ASGCT, the AACR, and the RNAi Global Initiative.
