Mahesh P. Shanmugam graduated from Stanley Medical College, Madras, India in 1990 with a gold medal for proficiency in medicine. He joined Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India and completed a Diploma in ophthalmology (University of Madras, Chennai, India) in 1992, fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases (Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India) in 1993, FRCS Edinburgh in 2002, and a Ph.D. degree in ophthalmology (Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, India) in 2003. He continued at Sankara Nethralaya after postgraduation to become the Associate Director of ocular oncology and Senior Consultant at the Department of Vitreoretinal Diseases until 2005. He subsequently served as Associate Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and as Honorary Professor, Shantou University, Shantou, China.He specialises in medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases and ocular oncology. He has 92 publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmic literature and multiple chapters in ophthalmic text books. Shanmugam has conducted instruction courses and delivered numerous lectures in national and international conferences and is a reviewer for ophthalmic journals. He is the recipient of the Col. Rangachari Award for best scientific paper presented at the All India Ophthalmological Annual Conference in 2009. He is a Member of the American Society of Retinal Surgeons, ARVO, All India Ophthalmological Society, Vitreoretinal Society of India, and Sankara Nethralaya Alumni Association. He is currently Head of vitreoretinal and ocular oncology services of Sankara Eye Hospitals, and Visiting Professor at the The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Shantou University, China. He is a Founding Member of RetNetIndia, an internet-based discussion forum for vitreoretinal surgeons in India and abroad.
