Piero Portincasa

Piero Portincasa, born in 1956, is an internist (1986), Ph.D. degree receiver (Utrecht, The Netherlands, 1995), Associate Professor of internal medicine (2001), and works as a fulltime consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Bari in Bari, Italy. He graduated as an MD from the University Medical School of Bari in 1981 and completed a 5-year residency in internal medicine in 1986. With a fellowship from the Italian Ministry of the University, he became Research Fellow from 1985 to 1987 at the University of London, UK (Gastroenterology Unit at Guy’s Hospital with Professor R.H. Dowling) and Researcher and Staff Member from 1993 to 1995 and in 1999 at Utrecht University, The Netherlands (Gastroenterology Unit with Professor G.P. van Berge Henegouwen and Dr. K.J. van Erpecum), leading to a Ph.D. degree with the title “Gallbladder and bile in health and disease. The role of motility, gallstones, and bile lipid composition.” Piero Portincasa is leading an established international research group in Bari and is involved in translational research focusing on several aspects of hepatobiliary diseases (liver, gallbladder, and intestine) and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal secretion, transport, and motility. Teaching activities include internal medicine, pathophysiology, methodology to 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th year medical students and residents (radiology, radiotherapy, occupational medicine, and clinical pharmacology), and construction of the European mobility programs (Socrates-Erasmus) towards and from several European universities. Piero Portincasa is author and coauthor of over 100 international clinical and basic science papers and reviews in peer-reviewed journals with a high impact factor. He has received several grants and awards, including the Italian Ministry of University, the European Society for Clinical Investigation, the Italian Society of Gastroenterology, the Dutch Society of Gastroenterology, and the National Centre of Research in Italy.
