Masaji Hashimoto was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1956. He graduated from University of Tokyo, Faculty of Medicine, in 1982. He started surgical residency in the Tokyo University Hospital and Mitsui Memorial Hospital. He was a Research Fellow at the Department of General Surgery, Michigan University in United State of America from 1991 to1992. In 1994, he proceeded to Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Medical Science) from University of Tokyo "Treatment of cirrhotic rats with epidermal growth factor and insulin accelerates liver DNA synthesis after partial hepatectomy." From 1994, he works as a Surgeon in digestive surgery, Toranomon Hospital in Tokyo. He is a Chief of the Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Division in Digestive Surgery in Toranomon Hospital. He is mainly interested in hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery and imaging diagnoses of hepatobiliary pancreatic disease. From 2008, he serves as an Associate Editor of the official Journal of Japanese Gastrointestinal Surgical Society. He is regent of several surgical and hepatobiliary pancreatic societies in Japan.
