Roy E. Weiss

University of Chicago, USA

Roy E. Weiss is a Rabbi Morris I. Esformes Professor of medicine at The University of Chicago. He is also the Chief of Adult and Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Unit. Dr. Weiss is the inaugural leader of this unique section that provides clinical care, teaching, and research in all endocrine diseases that span a life time. Weiss also serves as the Director of the Clinical Research Center of the University of Chicago funded by Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). He is a World Authority on genetic diseases of the thyroid with research which centers on the mechanisms of thyroid hormone action at the molecular, physiological, and psychological levels. Dr. Weiss' research has examined the molecular basis for the syndrome of resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH). His laboratory has identified two subtypes of families with RTH, namely, a group with mutations in the thyroid hormone receptor (TR) beta gene and a smaller group without TR beta mutations. The latter subtype suggests that inherited comodulatory factors determine the phenotype in this syndrome. Concurrent studies with transgenic mice deficient in TR isoforms and coactivators serve as models to determine the contribution of these factors in thyroid hormone action. Nationally he is an active Member of The Endocrine Society, Central Society for Research, American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, the American Physiological Society, and the American Thyroid Association. He has been an Invited Speaker on the national and international arenas for many times, and served as an Associate Editor of Encyclopedia for Endocrinolgy and Thyroid. He was also on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles on endocrine research.
