Manuel Morcillo was born in Madrid in 1948. Morcillo is Graduate in chemistry, with speciality in metallurgy (1970) and holds a Doctor in Chemistry degree (1974) from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Morcillo is Specialized in metallic corrosion and protection, in the research areas of corrosion in natural environments and protection by coatings. He joined the Department of Corrosion and Protection at the National Centre for Metallurgical Research (CENIM) of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) as a Scholarship Holder in 1969 and was named Research Professor in 1990. Morcillo has been a CENIM Director since November 2000. Previously, he was the Head of the Department of Corrosion and Protection (1990–1996) and the Head of the Department of Materials Engineering, Degradation and Durability (1998–2000). Morcillo is an author of more than two hundred scientific publications in specialized national and foreign journals, coeditor of several books on the speciality, and author of chapters in national and foreign collective publications. He has been the Principal Researcher in many research projects financed by the European Union, the Spanish National R&D Plan, and by national and foreign private companies, in a number of cases as an International Coordinator.
