Samuel Valença has a degree in physical therapy (2000), as well as both M.S. (2002) and Ph.D. degrees in morphology (2005). He was a Postdoc Fellow of the Foundation for Research Support of Rio de Janeiro State (FAPERJ) for eight months working at the Tissue Repair Laboratory (Rio de Janeiro State University, UERJ) and then worked as a Visiting Professor for two years at the same university. He joined the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in September 2009. His research activities contributed to the establishment and formation of three well-defined research lines at the Institute Biomedical Sciences. They are experimental lung inflammation, oxidative stress, and extracellular matrix.
