Philip W. Wertz
Philip W. Wertz is a Professor at the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at the University of Iowa and the Dows Institute. He earned his A.B. degree in biochemistry at Rutgers University, NJ, USA (1971) and received his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin, Wis, USA (1976). His thesis research was in the area of chemical kinetics, catalysis, and computer simulation. After postdoctoral training at McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, Dr. Wertz was appointed as a research scientist at Marshall Dermatology Research Laboratories at the University of Iowa. In 1990, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the College of Dentistry, University of Iowa, and in 1993, he was promoted to the present rank. His research focuses on lipids and barrier function in skin and oral mucosa. He is a Member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, American Oil Chemists Society, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Association for Dental Research, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Dr. Wertz is currently a Member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and TransDermal.
