Mitjan Kalin has finished his Ph.D. degree in 1999 at the University of Ljubljana and his Postdoctoral degree at NIST, USA in 2000. In his research, he focuses on tribology of nonconventional materials, such as ceramics, coatings, and composites. Recently, he is mostly involved in water lubrication of ceramics, boundary lubrication of DLC, and tribology of ceramics for extreme applications. In these areas, he has led several national and European as well as bilateral projects. He holds 10 national and USA patents. He has published about 70 peer-reviewed papers and two books at international publishers. He acts as an Associate Editor of Journal of Tribology, and is a Member of the Editorial Board of Industrial lubrication and Tribology, Advances in Tribology, and ISRN Mechanical Engineering. He is also a Recipient of ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award (2006) and National “Zois” Award (2006) for early scientific achievements. He is an Active Member of several international societies, including ASME and STLE and Founding Member of Slovenian Society for Tribology and Executive Board Member of Slovenian Society for Materials. He coorganised several conferences, and currently is a Chair of ECI Conference on Advances in Boundary Lubrication and Boundary Surface Films. He is an Associate professor at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he presently acts as a Vice Dean for Research at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
