José E. H. Pittella was born in Santos Dumont, Brazil, in 1946. He received the degree in medicine and the Ph.D. degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais Medical School, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1969 and 1981, respectively and he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Abteilung für Neuropathologie, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Hannover, Germany, in 1980-82. He served as a Guest researcher at the Institut für Neuropathologie, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Hannover, Germany, in 1991-92, and in 1994, and at the Institut für Neuropathologie, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, in 1997. In addition, he held the position of Full Professor at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Medical School, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 1991 to 2001 and Head of the Laboratory of Neuropathology, Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Medical School, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 1976 to 2001. He was also a Researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, from 1976 to 2002. Since 2008, he worked as a neuropathologist at the Pathology Service, Clinics Hospital, Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. Author (with Sebastião Gusmão) of the book Pathology of Head Trauma (in Portuguese), Revinter, Rio de Janeiro, 1995. Besides, he is editor of the book Bogliolo Pathology (in Portuguese), Guanabara Koogan, Rio de Janeiro, 5th edition, 1994. Recipient of “Pirajá da Silva” award granted to scientists who have contributed to the study of schistosomiasis, in Salvador, Brazil, 2008. He is mainly interested in neuropathology of tropical infectious diseases Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, cysticercosis), AIDS, head trauma, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, brain aging, and dementia.
