Hans Joenje received the Ph.D. degree in bacterial genetics from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Moreover, he has postdoctoral studies in molecular embryology at MRC-LMB, Cambridge, UK, and at The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md, USA. As of 1977, Joenje had a tenured position at the Clinical Genetics Department, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Currently, he is appointed as the Dutch Cancer Society Professor of oncogenetics, in particular the functional genomics of Fanconi anemia. His research interests include molecular basis of bone marrow failure syndromes, cellular oxygen toxicity, and tolerance mechanisms as related to cancer and aging.
