Jeremy M. Crook completed a Ph.D. degree in 1998 at The University of Melbourne (UoM), Parkville, VIC, Australia. He is currently an Associate Professor and Principal Fellow at the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health, University of Wollongong, Australia, and holds an honorary appointment as Associate Professor and Principal Fellow at the Department of Surgery, St Vincent’s Hospital, UoM. Crook previously worked as Head of the Stem Cells and Disease Models Laboratory at the UoM Centre for Neural Engineering, Group Leader of the Stem Cell Disease Models Laboratory at A*STAR's Institute of Medical Biology, the Head of the Singapore Stem Cell Bank, and a Research Fellow at the US National Institutes of Health Clinical Brain Disorders Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. In the biotechnology sector Crook worked for ES Cell International as Program Manager of Platform Technologies in Melbourne and Singapore. Crook is a pioneer of in vitro disease modeling using stem cells. His team was the first to develop human stem cell-based models of psychiatric disorders. Earlier work by Crook includes deriving the first clinically compliant human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines for drug discovery and cell-based therapies. The lines have been selected by the Californian Institute of Regenerative Medicine and University of California System institutions to streamline their efforts to translate pluripotent stem cells into human therapies. Crook’s research is complimented by his work with the International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI). ISCBI provides international standards for banking, characterization, and testing hES and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells for research and clinical cell delivery. Crook has published in high impact journals such as Cell Stem Cell, Nature (Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Psychiatry), and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Finally, Jeremy is serving on the editorial boards of many scientific journals and advisory panels.
