Francisca Fernández-Piñas was born in Cáceres, Spain in 1962. She received the Biology (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) degree in 1985 and the Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) in 1991 by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. She was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Plant Research Laboratory (Michigan State University, Mich, USA) from 1991 to 1993; since 1993, she has been working at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid where she holds a permanent position as a Professor Titular of the Department of Biology. Her research has mainly focused on different aspects of the biology of cyanobacteria with growing interests in toxicological issues. She is a current reviewer of articles submitted to relevant indexed journals in the field of environmental sciences, microbiology, and plant sciences. So far, she has participated in 16 scientific projects financed by several agencies, and, at present, she is the Principal Investigator of a research project financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation on the development of novel ecotoxicity bioassays to assess the toxicity of priority and emerging pollutants both individually and in combined mixtures.
