Amr Elnashai

Amr Elnashai is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is also a Professor at the CEE Department, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Director of the NSF Mid-America Earthquake Center. He is the Director of the Geoarge E. Brown Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Laboratory at Illinois. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the UK Institution of Structural Engineers. Elnashai is the leader of the MAE Center project on catastrophic event planning funded by FEMA. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Imperial College, University of London, UK. Before joining the University of Illinois in 2001, he was a Professor of earthquake engineering and the Head of the Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Section at Imperial College. He is the Founder and Coeditor of the Journal of Earthquake Engineering, Editorial Board member of several journals, member of the drafting panel of several international seismic design codes, and Past Senior Vice President of the European Association of Earthquake Engineering. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey since 1997. Other visiting appointments include the University of Tokyo, the University of Southern California, and the European School for Advanced Studies in Reduction of Seismic Risk, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He is a Member of the Applied Technology Council (ATC) Technical Committees. He has worked in the field and reported on most of the damaging earthquakes around the world since the mid-eighties, including the recent devastating earthquakes in Pakistan, Indonesia, and Peru. His technical interests are experimental, analytical, and field investigations of the response of structures to earthquakes, on which he has more than 250 research publications, including over 120 refereed journal papers, 8 books and book chapters, magazine articles, and field mission reports. He has supervised 29 Ph.D. theses in his field of interest.
