Gordon Ferns is the Dean and the Professor of metabolic and molecular medicine at the University of Surrey, where he was appointed in 1996. He qualified in medicine from London University in 1979 and subsequently undertook postgraduate research at St Bartholomew's Hospital, University of Washington, Seattle, Wash, USA, and The William Harvey Research Institute, London. He has more than 250 publications and was awarded a D.S. degree for his work on atherosclerosis in 2003. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Pathology and Physicians of London.
