Ole Thienhaus, M.D., was born in Flensburg, a town on the German-Danish border. He received his undergraduate education in Germany and attended medical school in Ireland and Germany, graduating from the College of Medicine of the Free University of Berlin in 1978. He completed a psychiatric residency at the University of Cincinnati in 1983 and a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at the same institution in 1984. He joined the Faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and started a research career focused on dementing illness of old age. In 1985, he received the M.A. degree in business administration from the University of Cincinnati. In 1996, he became the Chairman of psychiatry at the University of Nevada Schopol of Medicine, expanding the department in its existing location in Reno and building a new presence in Las Vegas. From 2008 to 2010, he was appointed as the Dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
