Marc Coppens was born in Beveren, Belgium, in 1954. He received his M.A. degree in mathematics in 1976 from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and in 1983, he received his Ph.D. degree in mathematics at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. In 1983, he became a Lecturer at the Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen, teaching calculus and statistics to engineering students. In 1990, he became a Research Fellow at the Mathematical Department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and at 2006, he became affiliated to the same university. His research domain is algebraic geometry, especially linear systems on complex and real curves, and more generally the study of varieties embedded in projective space having special geometric properties. Another topic is linear systems on graphs and on tropical curves.
