Manuela Merli, M.D., graduated in medicine from the University of Rome La Sapienza (summa cum laude) in 1980. In 2001, she became an Associated Professor at the same University. She serves at present as a Senior Assistant and as a Consultant Physician at the Gastroenterology Division, Department of Clinical Medicine, and she is involved in the Liver Transplant Program at the University Hospital Policlinico Umberto I. Her fields of research are liver cirrhosis, pathogenesis and treatment of portal hypertension, pathogenesis and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, results and problems in patients with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, nutrition and metabolic abnormalities in patients with chronic liver disease, cardiac abnormalities in patients with chronic liver disease, and liver transplantation.
