Ya Xu received his Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Tsukuba, Japan. Presently, he is a Principal Researcher at the National Institute for materials Science, Japan. From 2003 to 2005, he was a Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science, Japan. In the period of 2000–2003, Xu was a NEDO Researcher at the Smart Structure Research Center, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan (NEDO: New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, subsidiary of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). From 1997 to 2000, he was a Domestic Research Fellow of JST, Tsukuba Magnet Laboratory, National Research Institute for Metals, Japan. Xu's research areas are metal catalysts for hydrogen production, intermetallics, and smart materials and shape memory alloys.
