Akira Hishinuma was born in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1956. He received the M.D. degree from Gunma University School of Medicine, Maebashi, Japan in 1981, and the Ph.D. degree from Colombia University, New York, USA in 1986. He received the Japanese medical licensure in 1981. Dr. Hishinuma was trained as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Physiology, Yale University School of Medicine, Conn, USA and as a Research Associate in Arizona Research Laboratories, University of Arizona, Ariz, USA. After he joined Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan as an Assistant Professor in 1987, he was promoted to an Associate Professor in 1997. In 2010, he was appointed as a Professor in the Department of Infection Control and Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan and the Director of Clinical Laboratories, Dokkyo University Hospital. He holds certification of many medical societies including Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine, the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, Japan Thyroid Association, Japan Diabetes Society, the Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry, and Japan Board of Medical Genetics. He is also an Infection Control Doctor. Dr. Hishinuma serves as a Council Member of Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine, the Japan Endocrine Society, and the Japan Thyroid Association. He is a Member of the Editorial Board of Journal of the Japan Thyroid Association. His main research interests are genetic diagnosis of endocrine diseases, especially thyroid diseases, and drug resistance of infectious agents.
