Gerald W. Zamponi
Gerald W. Zamponi's research activities focus on the biophysics, molecular biology, electrophysiology, and pharmacology of calcium channels and their roles in neurological disorders. Of particular interest to his laboratory are the molecular determinants that govern the interactions between presynaptic calcium channels, G protein coupled receptors, and the proteins of the synaptic vesicle release machinery complex. A second major aspect of his work is centered around the molecular mechanisms which control the functional and pharmacological profiles of calcium channels. Finally, his laboratory is interested in the molecular physiology of T-type calcium channels and how they contribute the normal neuronal function and brain pathophysiology. Finally, Dr. Zamponi's lab works extensively in the area of drug discovery for novel treatments of pain and epilepsy.
