J. Kira works as a Professor and as the Chairman of the Department of Neurology in Neurological institute, the Kyushu University, Japan. He obtained the M.D. degree in 1979 and his Ph.D. degree in 1986 at Kyushu University. From 1982 to 1985, he went to the Myelin Chemistry NIH, Bethesda, USA as a Visiting Fellow. Upon his return home, he served as an Assistant Professor until 1995, as an Associate Professor until 1997, and as a Professor at the Department of Neurology. He is currently a Corresponding Member of the American Neurological Association, Editorial Board Member of Multiple Sclerosis Journal and the Open Neurology Journal. He served as the President of the Japanese society of Neuroimmunology from 2004 to 2005. He has served as a Member of Japanese Society of Neurology, the Japan Society of Neurovegetative Research, the Japanese Society for Neuroimmunology, and the Japanese Peripheral Nerve Society. His current research areas are immunological and immunogenetical studies of multiple sclerosis, clinical and immunological studies of atopic myelitis, and genetical and immunological studies of motor neuron diseases.
