Edmond Craig Dukes

Edmond Craig Dukes is an experimental particle physicist. He is currently a Professor at the University of Virginia, and he has held visiting positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory, CERN, Fermilab, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). Dukes received undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics at the College of William & Mary and the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1984. His early work was the study of polarization properties of hyperons produced in high-energy reactions and the measurement of the magnetic moments of the charged hyperons. His postdoctoral work was the study of direct photons in proton and antiproton reactions at CERN. On returning to the United States in 1989 to take a professorship at the University of Virginia, he explored the prospects for CP-violation measurements in the B mesons at the SSC. After the demise of the SSC, Dukes colead the HyperCP experiment at Fermilab, which made high-precision measurements of hyperon properties, including searches for direct CP violation in Lambda, Xi, and Omega hyperons. Dukes is currently a member of the NOvA neutrino oscillation experiment at Fermilab, and is exploring mounting a high-sensitivity muon-to-electron conversion experiment at Fermilab.
