Yutaka Hiraoka was born in Okayama, Japan, in 1948. He studied metallurgy at Kyoto University (Kyoto) and received the B.Eng., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees From 1976 to 1990. He worked as a Technical Officer of the National Institute for Metals (currently NIMS, Tsukuba). Since 1990, he is working for Okayama University of Science, Okayama, and presently, he serves as a Professor at the Department of Applied Physics. He was appointed as the Director of the Academic Affairs Division from 2008 to 2010. He is mainly interested in the improvement of grain boundary strength in refractory metals and interface strength of their joints and composites. He is a Member of the Japan Institute of Metals, a Member of the Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy, and a Foreign Member of the American Welding Society. He is installed as the Head of Chugoku Branch of Japan Welding Society in 2010 and as a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Materials Science Foundation in 1997. In 1988, he received the Achievement Award from the Science and Technology Agency of Japanese Government. In 1999 and 2005, he received Advanced Research Award from the Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy.
