Ian Alwayn was born in 1968. He graduated from the Medical School, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands, in 1994 (cum laude) and completed his surgical residency at the Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 2003. During his residency, Dr. Alwayn was a Research Fellow at the Transplantation Biology Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School studying tolerance in xenotransplantation which led to his Ph.D. dissertation from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 2001. Following his surgical training, Dr. Alwayn received a fellowship from the Dutch Cancer Society to specialize in hepatobiliary and solid organ transplant surgery in Rotterdam, Paris, and Boston. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of surgery and pathology at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada and is an attending hepatobiliary and transplant surgeon at the Queen Elisabeth II Health Sciences Center in Halifax, NS, Canada.
