António Ascensão

António Ascensão was born in Mozambique and is a Professor of exercise physiology and biochemistry and cell biology in the Sport Biology Department of the Faculty of Sport, University of Porto (FADEUP). He develops his investigation under the support of the Research Center in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure (CIAFEL). Ascensão obtained his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry of exercise and completed his postdoctoral at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra, studying the effect of exercise as an antagonizing tool against Doxorubicin-induced cardiac mitochondrionopathy. Ascensão shares his research interests with Dr. Magalhães, which include the effects of exercise on mitochondrial bioenergetics, oxidative damage, and apoptotic signaling in diseased conditions.
