Julio A. Ibarra, earned his Medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City, Mexico. He did his pathology residency at the UCIMC-LBMMC program, and he had a one-year fellowship in cytopathology and surgical pathology at LBMMC. Dr. Ibarra is a Pathologist at the MemorialCare Health System in Southern California. He serves as the Medical Director of Pathology at the Breast Center of Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center (OCMMC). He serves in the medical executive committee and the hospital board. He is a Clinical Professor at the University of California at Irvine. He serves in the board of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Dr. Ibarra has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has participated in several national and international symposia on breast cancer related topics. He has been included as a Pathologist in the Best Doctors of Orange County in 1998, 2001, and 2004. Also, he has been named in Best Doctors in America in 1998, 2001, 2004–2007, and 2011-2012. Dr. Ibarra has served in the American Society of Breast Disease (ASBD) in different roles since 1999 including being President for the period of 2007–2008. In the ASBD, Dr. Ibarra was instrumental in the development of the Clearinghouse for Breast Disease, a web-based repository of all available guidelines/statements involving the different disciplines that participate in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Ibarra believes passionately in a multidisciplinary approach to breast patient care. He stresses that “pathologists cannot and should not practice breast pathology in a vacuum. We should always work in conjunction with radiology and surgery to maximize the benefit to the patient. We should always sign out pathology cases with a clear understanding of the radiology findings that led to that biopsy in the first place.”
