Guida Portela-Gomes received her M.D. degree (1969) at the Lisbon University, Lisbon, Portugal; she was a Gastroenterology Specialist (1974) at Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal. She received her Ph.D. degree in medical sciences in 1982 and the Associate Professorship in experimental pathology in 2000 at the Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. She is a Member of the International Advisory Board of the International Symposium for Chromaffin Cell Biology and Member of the Editorial Boards of World Journal of Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She also participated in postgraduate teaching and cosupervised doctoral thesis in Uppsala. Her research has focused on the characterization of peptide and amine-producing endocrine (also called neuroendocrine (NE)) cells and tumors, regarding their peptide content, expression of NE cell markers, expression of somatostatin and other peptide receptors, studies of endocrine pancreas in type-2 diabetes, and studies of autoimmunity to gastrointestinal NE cells regarding the identification of autoantigens and development of histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. Her research on NE markers and diagnosis of NE tumors is carried out in cooperation with clinical departments and regards the translation of laboratory findings into new ways for diagnosis and treatment. Portela-Gomes has published 60 original articles in international journals, 3 book chapters, and 40 abstracts (proceedings of international meetings).
