Gary Wysin

Gary Wysin completed the B.S.E.E. degree at the University of Toldeo, Ohio, USA, in 1978. Working on optical bistability, he completed the M.S. degree in physics at the University of Toledo in 1980. That was followed by the Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics at Cornell University in 1985. Part of his Ph.D. research was carried out at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, at the Center for Nonlinear Studies and the Theoretical Division, on theory, Monte Carlo, and spin-dynamics simulations for magnetic solitons and vortices in low-dimensional magnets. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in theoretical magnetism during 1986 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He continued his postdoctoral work at the Engineering Division at Los Alamos between 1986–1988 on the response of semiconductors to fast laser pulses. Dr. Wysin began teaching and research as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Kansas State University in 1988, where he is now a Professor. He teaches a range of courses including general physics, engineering physics, and graduate-level quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and computational physics. On various occassions during 1989–2000, he visited Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as a Visiting Research Professor, including the 1996–1997 sabbatical year. He was a Visiting Researcher during the Summers of 1990–1993 at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. During his 2004–2005 sabbatical year, he was a Visiting Research Professor at Universidade Federal de Vicosa, Brazil, for research on phase transitions and spin waves in magnets, and also at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil. His current areas of research interests include vortices in magnets, magnetic phase transitions, Monte Carlo and spin-dynamics simulations, pinning of vortices on magnetic defects, magnetic nanodots, magnetization reversal, and optical modes of dielectric cavities.
