Oliver Kempski was born in Munich, Germany. He received his M.D. degree at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, Germany. He is a Postdoc at the Institute for Surgical Research in Munich, initially studying cell volume regulation of glial cells. From 1983 to 1985, he was a Postdoc with Maria Spatz, NINCDS/NIH, working on the establishment of an artificial blood-brain barrier using cerebrovascular endothelial cells and glial cells from primary culture. His studies are on free radical formation and prostaglandin production during reperfusion after global cerebral ischemia. Moreover, he received a Habilitation degree in 1987. In 1988, he became an Assistant Professor. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the European Surgical Research.
