Fernanda Carvalho currently serves as Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department, Technical Superior Institute (IST), Technical University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal. Carvalho's main research areas are coordination chemistry, catalysis, and study of reaction mechanisms. Main research interests are (i) search for new transition metal catalysts to promote the formation of heterocycles by cyclization of unsaturated molecules (alkynes, nitriles, and isonitriles) in cascade processes with high atom economy and (ii) study of kinetics and reaction mechanisms by chemical or electrochemical methods. In 1987, Carvalho got the Ph.D. degree in coordination chemistry from IST, UTL under the supervision of Professor A. J. L. Pombeiro. In 2003, she received her Aggregation degree in industrial safety from IST, UTL. She carried out two postdoctorates on kinetics and mechanisms (1987-1988) at the Unit of Nitrogen Fixation, University of Sussex, England, UK, under supervision of Dr. R. Henderson and on GC-MS applied to catalysis (1988-1989) at the Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. R. Herrmann.
