T. Kostka was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1961. He received the M.D. degree and Ph.D. degree from the Medical University of Lodz in 1986 and 1992, respectively. His medical specialisation is in internal medicine (1992), sports medicine (1997), and geriatrics (2003). From 2000 till 2005, he served as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Preventive Medicine. Since 2005, he serves as a Professor and Head of Department of Geriatrics, Medical University of Lodz and as a Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical University of Lodz (since 2008). He has international experience at Kantonsspital Basel (Switzerland), Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield (UK), Service de Médecine Gériatrique, Centre Hospitalier Lyon-Sud, Lyon (France), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm (Sweden), and the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing, Sion (Switzerland). His teaching activities include gerontology and geriatrics, internal medicine, sports medicine, preventive medicine, and rehabilitation. His scientific activities include physiological and metabolic effects of physical activity in the elderly, muscle function, nutrition, antioxidant system, disability, frailty, rehabilitation, and quality of life in older people.
