Michael E. Speer
Michael E. Speer graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif, USA, in 1964 and attended Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Tex, USA, graduating in 1968. He completed his Pediatric Residency in 1973, and, following fellowships in pediatric infectious disease and neonatal-perinatal medicine, he joined the full-time clinical faculty at Baylor College of Medicine where he is currently Professor of pediatrics and ethics. At present, he serves as the Deputy Chief of pediatrics at The Methodist Hospital and Chief of the Newborn and Premature Service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital as well the Medical Director of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program at Texas Children’s Hospital. He has served as president of numerous medical organizations locally and statewide. He has been equally active in the Texas Medical Association, serving since 1992 as a Delegate from Harris County to the Association’s House of Delegates. Dr. Speer was elected to the TMA’s Board of Trustees and served on the Board’s Executive Committee for 4 years as well as being its Vice Chair in 2008-2009 and Chair in 2009-2010. Additionally, Dr. Speer has served on a number of national committees of his national society, the AAP. In 1998, he was elected to the Executive Committee of the AAP Perinatal Section, the national organization of neonatologists in the United States, and subsequently served as the Section’s Chairperson (2002–2004). From July 1, 1970, to June 30, 1972, Dr. Speer served as Lieutenant and Lt. Commander on active duty in the United States Navy at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center as the center’s pediatrician. He has published over 130 articles, abstracts, and monographs and has lectured extensively both in this country and abroad.
