Hiroshi Niwa is Vice President and Chair of Respiratory Disease Center and Director of thoracic surgery of Seirei Mikatahara General Hospital in Hamamatsu, Japan. He also works as a Clinical Professor of surgery at the Nagoya City University Medical school and Seirei Christopher University. He is the President of the 34th annual meeting of the Japan Society for Respiratory Endoscopy, Chair of the Shizuoka Association for Chest Surgery, and the Director of the Japan Association for Chest Surgery. He is also a Councilor of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Japanese Respiratory Society, the Japan Broncho-Esophagological Society, the Japan Lung Cancer Society, and the Japanese Society for Tuberculosis. He served as a Member of Advisory Committee of IMIG 2010. His team has received a number of prestigious awards, including the special award from the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery and encouraging medical treatment award from Hamamatsu City. Niwa is a skilful surgeon and coleads a large thoracic surgical team. His clinical research focuses on surgery for Pancoast tumor, limited surgery for small lung cancer, and chemosensitivity of lung cancer by histoculture drug response assay. He has published over 200 peer reviewed papers and over 30 books chapters in Japanese and in English. Niwa was born in 1953 and graduated at the Nagoya City University Medical school in 1978 and received his medical degree from the same school in 1982. He completed his residency and fellowship training in thoracic surgery at the same university. He has over 30 years of experience caring for patients with surgical thoracic diseases, especially lung cancer.
